The autumn leaves have lingered longer than usual The autumn leaves have lingered longer than usual this year, although winter has now blown in and I suspect the leaves will all be gone in a few days time. Castlemaine Botanic Garden.
Chilling out for a few days on the beautiful Pembr Chilling out for a few days on the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast, in Wales. Delightfully crowd-free, even in mid-Summer.
Blenheim Palace: the only non-royal palace in the Blenheim Palace: the only non-royal palace in the UK and still the residence of the Duke of Marlborough. It’s also the birthplace and ancestral home of Winston Churchill. I love a good stately home, and I’m a sucker for a sparkly chandelier or three, but this ‘house’ is over the top.
Checking out how the other half live in and around Checking out how the other half live in and around Newbury. Highclere Castle (the real Downton Abbey), Shaw House (a remarkably preserved Elizabethan Mansion) and the ruins of 14th century Donnington Castle, destroyed during the Civil War in the first Battle of Newbury.

Swanning about on the Avon & Kennet Canal in Newbu Swanning about on the Avon & Kennet Canal in Newbury, where the local delicacy is a Lardy Cake: it’s as calorific as it sounds, and perfect with a strong cup of tea. Exactly what you need after a narrowboat ride.
9,262 km in three months on our mountain motorcycl 9,262 km in three months on our mountain motorcycle tour through Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Austria and Germany. Almost all of those kilometres were on twisty backroads and many of those were high above the snow line (apart from a little Mediterranean beach-break detour to Sardinia).
But all good things come to an end, eventually. As Aussies, we’re only allowed to stay visa-free in Europe for 90 days in every 180, and our time is almost up. So we’re putting the V-Strom into storage in Germany and heading to the UK to hang out with friends for a few weeks before going home to plan the next big bike adventure. Thanks for following along! #ultimateroadtrips
Heidelberg; home to Germany’s oldest university an Heidelberg; home to Germany’s oldest university and the very romantic ruins of what was one of the grandest Renaissance castles in the Holy Roman Empire. Surviving WWII with hardly a scratch the city is full of historic buildings and charming details, making it one of Germany’s most elegant cities. #ultimateroadtrips
Waving goodbye to the mountains after six and a ha Waving goodbye to the mountains after six and a half weeks in the Alps riding across the peaks in France, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Austria and Germany. So many great roads, so many twists and turns, so many absolutely awesome views.#ultimateroadtrips
Every wall tells a story in Garmisch-Partenkirchen Every wall tells a story in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the Bavarian Alps. Known as Lüftlmalerei, the frescos depict local legends, historic events and biblical scenes. The cafes also serve pork knuckles the size of rockmelons! #ultimateroadtrips
Still in the Alps! Even the motorways in Austria ( Still in the Alps! Even the motorways in Austria (well, some of them) are scenic. Even better, despite the ominous clouds we stayed dry all day 😊 . #ultimateroadtrips
Moosham Castle (although they call it a Schloss in Moosham Castle (although they call it a Schloss in these parts) in the Austrian Alps. Looks pretty, but has a very dark past: more than a hundred people accused of sorcery were tortured and murdered here during the infamous witch trials in the late 17th century. Many of those killed were children, some as young as 10. Legend has it that the castle has also been home to werewolves. Not surprisingly it’s also reputed to be haunted. Creepy! #ultimateroadtrips
Back in the Alps, although today it was a loop aro Back in the Alps, although today it was a loop around a section of the Julian Alps in Slovenia. Gorgeous scenery, although some sections of the road (the potholed, chopped up bits) reminded us of Victorian roads back home. Some of the switchbacks and hairpins (of which there were many) are still paved with cobblestones, which made things a little interesting at times. #ultimateroadtrips
Enjoying a very welcome cool change in beautiful B Enjoying a very welcome cool change in beautiful Bled, Slovenia. Also enjoying the famous Bled cream cake (kremšnita) (swipe left to the last pic) although it’ll never beat an old fashioned Aussie vanilla slice 😉 #ultimateroadtrips

Exploring the birthplace of Italian bubbles in the Exploring the birthplace of Italian bubbles in the Prosecco Hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, just south of Feltre in Veneto on the edge of the Dolomites. Perfect spot for a long lazy summer lunch with a view… and a glass of bubbly or two. #ultimateroadtrips
It’s all about the detail in the small but splendi It’s all about the detail in the small but splendid old Venetian walled town of Feltre, in the Dolomites. Entry into the old town centre is still through one of three original city gates, and you can still see fragments of once colourful frescos adorning the Renaissance houses and porticos. You’ve got to hand it to the medieval Venetians, they certainly knew how to build beautiful cities! #ultimateroadtrips
We came to Mandello del Lario on Lake Como in nort We came to Mandello del Lario on Lake Como in northern Italy to visit the famous Moto Guzzi museum, (the legendary motorcycle factory - Europe’s oldest - is here) but I think we’ll stay for the lake and charming medieval alleyways. #ultimateroadtrips
